New York: Leypoldt & Holt, 1869. First Edition. First state, with p.[172] blank. Octavo (17.5cm). In original plum cloth, titled in gilt on front and spine; chocolate brown coated endpapers; [1]-163, [9]pp; 6pp of publisher's ads at rear. A straight, sound copy, spine sunned, extremities rubbed; remnants of bookplate to front pastedown, one or two minor pencil marks but largely clean: Very Good.

Fiske (1842-1901) was the "most popular historian of his generation," and helped to popularize the theory of evolution (ANB). This is his first book, a thorough defense of smoking and drinking. BAL 5993.
