Photo-illustrated boards with red cloth spine. Unpaginated. Measures 22.5 x 21 cm. Many photograph reproductions. Horace Bristol was an American photographer best known for his photojournalism with LIFE magazine and for the photographs he took as a military photographer during World War II under the command of Edward J. Steichen. After the war, Bristol lived and worked in Japan, where he established the East-West Photo Agency and published photo books about Asia. This book is presented as an instruction in using the new Japanese 35 mm cameras capturing scenes of traditional Japanese life by a typical GI "on a five day pass". Images include sumo wrestlers, a fully-tattooed man at a bath, many pretty women in kimonos, Noh performers, temples and other upbeat scenes. Uncommon to find in such nice condition. .
