Semi-autobiographical novel by English lawyer, judge and politician Thomas Hughes (1822 - 1896). 360 pgs. The story, set in the 1830s, at Rugby School, a public school for boys that Hughes himself attended from 1834 to 1842. The fictional Tom Brown's life much resembles that of the author, brother George Hughes, perhaps that of Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, and features Dr Thomas Arnold (1795 - 1842), who was the actual headmaster of Rugby School from 1828 to 1841.
