[BUDD SCHULBERG JEROME LAWRENCE TOMORROW FREE WORLD THEATRE; HOLLYWOOD WRITERS' MOBILIZATION; MANUSCRIPT] "TOMORROW – FREE WORLD THEATRE #2" by Budd Schulberg and Jerome Lawrence, Sunday, Blue Network, February 28, 1943, first printing before being included in the anthology "Free World Theatre Nineteen New Radio Plays with an Introduction by Thomas Mann" published in 1944 by Random House, Free World Theater was a WWII home-front project of 19 propaganda/morale-boosting radio plays produced and directed by Arch Oboler…"Ladies and Gentleman, because this is a war not only of men, but of ideas — the Hollywood Writers' Mobilization in cooperation with the Blue Network, is presenting a series of plays based on ideas presented by such world personalities as President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Churchill, Mr, Joseph Stalin…These ideas are being dramatized by Hollywood's most talented playwrights, and the leading roles in the plays will be taken by some of the finest actors and actresses…" (part of the opening by ANNOUNCER)…John Garfield, Ray Collins, Beulah Bondi, and Frank Martin having roles in the second play of the Free World Theatre titled "Tomorrow", a "time when the war is over – the very day when someone's boy is coming home", the play opens with parents at a train station greeting their son returning from the war, the main scene of the play is one of normality with the family eating a roast beef dinner and talking about social and business conditions now that the war is ended, the son reminds the father that winning the war was an effort of many nations working together, toward the end a neighbor comes by and reads a letter from a soldier on a ship waiting to land on D-Day who mentions another soldier who was killed when German shore guns started firing, thus reminding all assembled of the sacrifices made in winning the war…24-page original ribbon typescript plus cover page stapled at upper left corner , 8-1/2" x 11";NOTES: BUDD SCHULBERG, 1914-2009, screenwriter for the Academy Award winning movie "On the Waterfront"; JEROME LAWRENCE, 1915-2004, with partner Robert Edwin Lee, helped to create Armed Forces Radio, the two also collaborated on the play "Auntie Mame"; PROVENANCE: script was among office and career memorabilia of Gerald Kean (sometimes Keane, 1915-2002) acquired at an estate sale in Fairfield County, CT…during WWII Kean was with the U. S. Office of War Information where he produced and directed many radio programs written by leading writers and featuring celebrities of the era ///// CONDITION: well-preserved, light normal wear, touches of edgewear to cover page, text uneven in shading in parts, but all text legible.
