About This Item

Omni Publications. Hardcover. New. An historical account of the iconic T&T (1907-1940), the epitome of desert railroading. This line was originally built by Francis Marion Smith of the famed Twenty Mule Team operations to haul his wealth of borax from the depths of Death Valley, California. It also served as a connecting line to the gold and silver mines of southern Nevada and in later times thrived as a shipper of talc and clay. Included in this title is information about other Death Valley railroads including the 'baby gauge' railroads at Ryan, as well as the Bullfrog Goldfield, Las Vegas & Tonopah, Tecopa, Borate & Dagget, and the Ludlow & Southern. Within the 296 pages are nearly 500 B&W photographs and illustrations, timetables and maps. 60 color pages of ephemera and a comprehensive locomotive, rolling stock and station name roster. Contents: Foreword and Acknowledgements, pp. 7-8, Smith, Borax and Friends, pp. 9-26, The Tonopah & Tidewater Railroad, pp. 27-196, A Tale of Two Ryans, pp. 197-249, Appendix, pp. 250-285, Bibliography, pp. 286-288, Index, pp. 289-296. This would make a very interesting model railroad. Printed on high-quality paper stock. Omni Publications, hardcover with color jacket, 296 pages, standard portrait book 8 x 10 in., over 500 B&W and Color photographs and illustrations.

Reviews

On Mar 7 2014, a reader said:
Serpico has his weaknesses as a researcher and writer. This is certainly not a comprehensive history. But then, comprehensive rail historys have no market and Serpico would have had to self publish such an epic work. Serpico's present book abundantly overcomes its faults with excellent photos, a grand Death Valley area railroadia with tickets, forms, maps, time tables, company passes and much more. I heartily recommend this as the best T&T book ever published (despite it's faults). I purchased one of the very first copies and will buy more for family and friends. -- Art Rader, Las Vegas (Former Nevada journalist, former Nevada state legislator, BA-History, UNLV; writer of unpublished UNLV MA-History thesis on the same subject matter.)

I reduce shipping for books that weigh less than 1 lb. with packaging. International shipping rates are quoted for a 1 lb. book. International orders that weigh more than 1 lb. will require additional shipping fees.

All books are shipped sealed in plastic to help prevent damage. Sturdy boxes are used often with bubble-wrap and additional padding. Thin titles may ship in a sturdy mailer with cardboard reinforcing. You will not receive 'rounded' books from Arizona Hobbies as you will from Amazon.com with their shoddy packaging.

A a bar code label with USPS a Tracking/Delivery Confirmation number is applied to your shipment. You will be advised of via email of the tracking when your order ships. USPS Media Mail (books, DVDs, CDs, maps) transit time is almost as good as UPS Ground today. Using a bar code label helps move the mail more quickly.

I've only had only six lost and three damaged shipments out of 20,000+ since 1999. This includes International shipments. I use a freight forwarder for International shipments. Canadian shipments bypass the USPS and go directly to Windsor, Ontario via my freight forwarder. It may take up to 2 weeks before Canada Post tracking information is available as we must consolidate orders to forward.

Defective DVDs will be replaced by the same title if available. Since most of my books are in NEW CONDITION and still in the printers plastic shrink-wrap, opened and thumbed through titles become used and a 20 percent re-stocking/used charge will apply plus the shipping costs incurred.
