Edited and with a foreword and chronology by Antonio Cornejo Polar. Octavo. 174pp. Small, almost invisible stain on the foredge not affecting the interior else fine in lightly worn, near fine dust jacket. First published in 1889, this book is reportedly first major Spanish American novel to protest the plight of native peoples. Clorinda Matto de Turner (1852-1909) was a noted Peruvian feminist, journalist, editor, and novelist. The first woman in the Americas to head a major newspaper, she was also editor of *El Peru Ilustrado*, the country's most influential intellectual journal. Because of her searing expose of small-town officials and priests in this book, she was reportedly excommunicated from the Catholic church and burned in effigy.
