About This Item
New York: Atlantic Monthly Press, 2019. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Fine in fine dust dust jacket. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. 306 pp. with bibliography, index. Illustrated with photos. Fascinating, essentially unknown story of football great Sid Luckman and his family's involvement with organized crime. Luckman (1916-1988) , a Brooklyn native, began earning headlines in the mid-1930s and a star footballer for Erasmus Hall High School. At the same time, however, his father Meyer Luckman was making headlines for quite a different reason---the 1935 gangland murder of his brother-in- law. Mr. Luckman was involved with the labor rackets and with Louis Lepke's Murder Inc. (Sid's father spent the rest of his life in Sing Sing). This book traces two simultaneous historical developments connected by a single immigrant family in Depression era New York: the rise of the National Football League and the powerful Chicago Bears; and the demise (triggered by Meyer Luckman's crime and its initial coverup) of the Brooklyn labor rackets and Murder, Inc.
