About This Item

Printed for presentation to the Roxburghe Club by the Earl of Perth, London, first edition, 1984. Edition limited to 200 copies for sale according to a contemporary advertisement for the book. Dark brown quarter morocco and wine-coloured boards, gilt spine title and decoration on both boards, gilt top, 4to, 29 cm,. [114] pp, ills. A facsimile of the manuscript journal of a Miss Parker, reproducing in addition to her text about her travels in Scotland many of her sketches and postcards. From an advertisement for the book: "No reader will fail to recognize the charms and occasional crosses of the Parker family. The attractions of Edinburgh (the Prince and Princess of Wales were there, but the crowds were such that they only caught a glimpse of her white hat), the spectacular scenery, the quaint characters and customs that they came across—all this will be familiar to the modern reader. And the rain, which left lasting memories on many a page. But other aspects will not be so predictable. There were, for one thing, far more trains and when there were not, carriages and horses presented their own special brand of delight and catastrophe. They even took a steam packet at Fort Augustus, where they saw a Confederate steampacket (the American Civil War was still raging) en route to Glasgow to load up and run the blockade. All these details, familiar and unfamiliar, make this a singularly delightful book. Fine. Laid in are a menu for a Roxburghe Club dinner held in the Upper Library [ of Stobhall] on 26th June, 1981 and an 8 page booklet "To commemorate the visit of the Roxburghe Club to Scotland, June 26th 1981" by the Earl of Perth describing his building up of the Library at Stobhat over the preceding 25 years.
