About This Item
[Caen]: [Chalopin], [ca. 1800]. Very Good. 12mo (137 x 84 mm). 12 pp. Signatures: A\4, B\2. Stab-sewn with binder's thread in original blue plain wrappers. Reference: René Helot, La Bibliothèque bleue en Normandie (1928), p. 245.
The text is a reduction of Vulsons 1660 original, which included a prose gloss and went on for 96 pages. The text is unchanged, there is just less of it. We learn, for instance, that if you dream that you are a tree, it means you are sick. If you dream that your teeth are longer than they really are, it means that your relatives are bothering you. Dreams of flying are a great honor. Dreaming of a beautiful personqui aura la tête & le visage très beau (with a beautiful head and face) means you will have joy, happiness and health. Yet it adds one important factor for popular consumption: not only does it explain the symbolism of your dreams, but it also publishes the most frequently drawn numbers in the Loterie Nationale. (Who hasnt dreamed of winning the lottery?) A rare document of popular credence and of the force of symbolism in popular culture. OCLC locates the Newberry and BnF copies only.

About Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio
Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio owes its name and its inspiration to the traditional Italian studio bibliografico. These small antiquarian bookshops, typically run by individuals who combine deep scholarship with a love of the printed object, remind us that underlying the words "study" and "studio" is the Latin term for zeal and devotion, studium. Since 1993, my goal has been to match discerning collectors with extraordinary books and manuscripts.
