About This Item

Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1875. First Edition, (presumed) later state of the binding. 401 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. Original rust-brown, terra-cotta cloth with blind stamped borders to covers and gilt titles on spine, some minor rubbing at edges, slight dampstaining to front and light dust soiling, foxing on endpapers and light dampstaining on bottom pastedown, else a very good copy of the author's scarce second book. First Edition, (presumed) later state of the binding. 401 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. First binding state with "James R. Osgood and Company" on spine. Published the same year as A Passionate Pilgrim, copies of this first impression (1500 copies per Edel and Laurence, or 1578 per Blanck) were bound up later with the "Houghton, Mifflin" spine imprint; Edel doesn't even mention this variant, with "Houghton, Osgood, & Co." at the foot of the spine. Blanck, however, poses the question: "Query: Also bound with the Houghton, Osgood & Company spine imprint?" This copy fairly answers that question. The cloth color is a rust, or terra-cotta; other copies were bound in purple or green, without priority. BAL 10530; Edel A2
