About This Item

Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1875. First Edition, and in the first binding state. 8vo, publisher's original cloth textured green cloth, the boards framed in blind, the spine gilt ruled and lettered. A very bright copy, fine but for a little light wear along the tips and lower board edges and an extremely faint and nearly imperceptible remnant of an old label on the lower portion of the spine, the text is solid and very clean and fresh. HARD TO FIND IN SUCH NICE CONDITION, AND ONLY THE AUTHOR'S SECOND BOOK. It was published the same year as his first, "The Passionate Pilgrim" and only about 1500 or so copies were printed. Much of the first edition print run was bound up later, but this copy is in the first state with "J.R. Osgood & Co printed on the spine.
In this work James provides a number of stories and sketches based upon his 14 months spent traveling in Europe between 1872 and 1874. Many of them are from time spent in Italy, but England, France, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, and Belgium are also included.
