About This Item
Howard Fertig, 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 738 pages followed by appendices. 9 by 11-1/4 inches. The first publication of a novel Mailer wrote at the age of 20, three years before he began work on The Naked and the Dead. Issued in an edition of 1,000 copies. First edition (first printing). A fine copy in a dust jacket with a few short closed tears at the edges. With a warm inscription by Mailer to his agent at the time the book was first written, Berta Koslow, whose unsuccessful efforts to get the book published are described by Mailer in the introduction. 'To Berta, in all the pleasure of the fine evening we had this year. But then who but you, dear Berta, can find as many memories in this book as myself. With thanks, then. Thirty-four years late, all my thanks. / Norman / March 1979 / Which is to say that your presence all those years ago were so nice and so fortuitous that it gave me a good feeling about things to come to a young writer. See -- I can't express myself clearly anymore.' A large, heavy book.
