London: Richard Phillips, 1809. Book. Illus. by 41 plates, 3 folding including 28 hand-color aquatints (collated, complete). Very Good. 3/4 Leather. First Edition. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. 2 volumes in one, black morocco leather spine with raised bands and bright gilt title. Large leather corners with very slight wear at the bottom edge, and marbled boards and matching endpapers. An handsome binding, not the original but old. Inside very clean and tight with no browning or foxing. Tissue guards on some plates, and some offsetting from some plates. Sir R.K. Porter was a Scottish artist, author, diplomat and traveller, appointed historical painter to Tsar Alexander I of Russia in 1804. Complications with the courtship to Princess Mary von Schenbastoff necessitated his departure to Finland and Sweden in 1806. He was able to return in 1811 to marry his Princess Mary. Abbey travel 13. Some plates were moved, apparently in the rebinding, but all are present. .
