London, Day & Sons, 1865, First Edition. . original green blind-stamped cloth, gilt spine title lettering, endpaper bookplate, corners slightly rubbed, light foxing on few leaves but overall clean, a fine copy in bright original covers, with the half title pages. . 8vo [26 x 17 cm]; 2 volumes, xvi, 360; xvi, 275 pp, 41 plates & maps, including 2 frontis's, some tinted plates, some double page & folding, 9 folding maps/plans, 38 other illus. . Cox ii, 518, Blackmer 1193. Newton was vice-consul in the Levant between 1852 and 1859 and lead the British government's expedition to Asia Minor in 1856, where the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was excavated. He became a curator at the British Museum in 1861. Travels in Turkey, Rhodes, Mytilene and related areas. Plates include relics that were excavated and scenery.
