About This Item
London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1816. 1st ed. Hardcover. Fair. Part the Second Complete in Three volumes (constituting Vol. 2-4 of the 6 volume First Edition published between 1810 and 1823). 88 (of 89) plates and maps (some folding), xix, (13), 715, xv, (12), 20, 822, xx, [14], 735p. Rebound in later heavy red buckram backed in pebbled faux leather (with matching corners on Sections the Second and Third but not Section the First). 30cm. The bindings are sound but quite unattractive. Title label lacking Section the First but present on the other two volumes. Substantial damping and rippling of pages throughout all three volumes (but no adherence). Lacks folding Outline map at end of Section the Second. Almost all plates have at least some dampstaining but all are still usable. Among Clarke's many enthusiasms was mineralogy; Section the Third contains, as a supplement, Clarke's account of his journey from Constantinople to Vienna, including his account of the Gold Mines of Transylvania and Hungary (pp. 527-701).
