About This Item

Washington: Government Printing Office, 1885., 1885. First edition. First edition. 8vo. Original full cloth, [1]-562 pp., 23.5 x 16 cm., 5 large folding maps in rear, tables, appendices. Six Score 81 says, "One of the "big four" cattle books; an indispensable source for research in the field. This issue, the "Treasury" issue, is the most desirable because of its maps and apparent priority of issue. It is a unique collection, and should be an early point of reference for anyone interested in this period. It contains more solid facts than any other primary source of the time." Herd 1674 says "Rare." "This book is held to be among the most important of the "big four" cattle books, and its contents were compiled by experts on the subject." Merrill p. 9 says, "The book deals with a unique subject, almost forgotten, a proposed cattle trail to connect Fort Griffin and Dodge City Trail at Fort Supply, Indian Territory, and proceed thence by a devious route to the Canadian line .... Nimmo's report is a fairly comprehensive analysis made of the range cattle industry of that time. The book is excessively rare." Streeter Sale 2377 says, "Nimmo's essay on the range and ranch cattle business of the United States, which comprises Part 3 of his report, is regarded as the best and most comprehensive treatment of the industry made to that time." Nimmo was a long time government employee and statistician who produced a variety of reports over his career; however, this is his most important work. An absolute cornerstone work on the cattle industry. Light wear to leather spine but well-treated and preserved, light wear to the margins of a few pages (not affecting the print), else a very good, solid copy housed in a quarter leather and marbled paper over boards clamshell case with raised bands and titles stamped in gilt on the spine.
