About This Item

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. Ltd.. Very Good/Good. 1934. First UK Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo Dust jacket chipped to edges, some fading to titles on spine, unclipped. Red cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. A few light foxing spots. vii, 277 pages. This is Meneken's first book since 1930, a remarkable combination of erudition and humour, thorough, brave, and amusing. In addition to giving a vast store of uncommon information, he succeeds in conveying a coherent and vivid picture of the origin, growth, and present state of morals. This is accomplished by keeping strict watch on the " five fundamental prohibitions, which are to be found in every moral system ever heard of". These prohibitions are levelled at murder, theft, trespass, adultery, and false witness. They are maintained by various types of authority.-the Greek or logical type, wisdom ; the Christian or theological type, Will of God; the Darwinian or biological type, inherent nature. In this book the vigour of Mencken's prose is as great as ever, and his views are set out plainly and excitingly. If this book is not a textbook, so much the worse for students. Everyone who, though bewildered, is hopeful of making a better world, should read it with care. .
