London: Heinemann, 1921. First Edition. Hard Cover. Signed by Author. First UK Edition. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. Stott's Second Issue (printed in Great Britain by Billing and Sons, Ltd Guildford and Esher) rather than issued with the American sheets. No priority established. Publisher's dark green-blue cloth lettered in gilt to the spine and front board, with publisher's name in black at the base of the spine. Heinemann device in black to back board. 302 pages + 10 pages Heinemann's current fiction catalogue at the rear. Front and rear hinges weak, heavy offsetting and toning to the front and rear end-papers and glue residue to the front paste-down from a book-plate now missing. A near VG copy. The book is inscribed to Edward Wassermann the prominent banker, collector and philanthropist who was the subject of a famous portrait by Salvador Dali: "Edward Wassermann/ from/ W. Somerset Maugham/ "The wise traveller travels only/ in imagination. No D/W. Photographs/scans available upon request.
