About This Item

London: Sold by C. Etherington and G. Lister, 1782 First edition. Appears to have been published in two parts in the same year; this volume contains the two parts, but only the second title page survives, which is dated 1782. No author is credited, only the names of the witnesses at the end of each of their evidence. HB. Original and very worn full leather binding, with no title evident to spine (perhaps as produced). 112pp (part one) and 107pp (part two). Green tinted page edges. No ilustrations, just the text of the trial, which took place at the Consistory Court of Doctor's Commons apparently between 1778 and 1781, and accused Mrs Newton of adultery with 5 named people and 'diverse other persons'. It boasts of 'Containing the Whole of the Evidence in that very Extraorordinary Trial.' The book is complete apart from the first title page, as mentioned, but is overall in Poor condition. The very worn binding, with losses and tears to spine, is also very slack and partly detached from spine, with the pages mostly held together, though the last page is detached (present) and the last page of part one has marginal losses, with a few words of the text missing but mostly of a publisher's note at the bottom. The paper is soiled at the ends but otherwise generally clean. Photos available.
