About This Item

Philadelphia: G.G. Evans, 1859. (USA) First Edition 19 x 13 cm, original brown textured cloth over boards, gold spine titles, 312pp. Frontis showing the housewife's dealings with the second-hand chinaware merchant, and 9 other B&W plates ( Four plates are missing: facing pages 29, 55, 111 and 129). There are 31 chapters to this book dealing with housekeeping topics such as the difficulty in hiring a good cook, to house cleaning, from cheap furniture to "A mother's duty". The presentation is anecdotal in tone, and some of it humorous in nature, although the advice seems to have been gleaned from hard experience. The housewife is talking in the first person, as if to a friend, and she is obviously a young housewife, married to a certain Mr. Smith. A good entertaining read for those interested in the problems of running a house some 150 years ago. Ths copy is quite clean and tight, there is a bookseller's stamp, no other markings, some wear to the corner tips and to the spine extremeties. This copy has two title pages a printed one and an illustrated one with a tissue guard. The tissue has foxed and someone has traced an outline on it. Acceptable copy considering the books age. (1.6 JM HOQ 100/3. 1st. Hardcover. Acceptable/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

About JWMah

JWMah has been selling out-of-print, used and rare books on the Internet since 1997. Our stock consists of a good balance of fiction and non-fiction books in a wide range of subjects. We also sell classical Lp records. Our Cookbooks, Canadiana, Travel and Exploration catalogues are worth a look. We examine each book that we sell and try our best to grade the books conservatively. We are strictly an internet business, so usually the books put up for sale are in stock. We try update our books every two days so that our listings are as fresh as possible. It is best to contact us by e-mail or by telephone to reserve a book, as some books sell quickly. We are located in Canada's westcoast and we ship internationally.
