About This Item

London: Methuen, 1965. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. London, Methuen, 1965. Quarto, 23, 122 pages with 48 plates plus 122 full-page plates and endpaper maps. Cloth; extremities slightly bumped and rubbed; an excellent copy with the dustwrapper a little sunned, creased, chipped and torn. With the ink ownership signature of John Strehlow on the first blank. In all, 122 tribes are 'represented by a single characteristic sculpture, displaying the essential formal qualities of the art of the tribe... So, with few exceptions (some of which are noted in this volume), the art of Africa consists of hundreds of discrete tribal universes, each of which had its own lines of evolution, deflected or enriched from time to time but not fundamentally altered by external influences' (dustwrapper blurb).
