About This Item

Chicago: Encyclopedia Brittanica, Inc., 1964. First edition. 17 illustrations including a previously unpublished watercolor painting by Jacqueline Kennedy reproduced from the original. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth, the cover and spine stamped in gilt, including a copy of Kennedy’s signature, in the publisher’s original slipcase. 164 pp. An excellent copy, fresh, clean and as pristine. FIRST EDITION IN THE ORIGINAL SLIPCASE. “It is the fate of this generation- of you in Congress and of me as President- to live with a struggle we did not start, in a world we did not make. But the pressures of life are not always distributed by choice. And while no nation has ever faced such a challenge, no nation has ever been so ready to seize the burden and the glory of freedom.” - John F. Kennedy to Congress, 1962. John F. Kennedy , in acknowledging that the United States had been an “experiment” in democracy, also recognized the need for practice and participation (the “burden”) in the continuation of this experiment. Although his political career was cut short, his life and ideas stimulated a revival in the notions of equality, responsibility towards others and the accountability of the United States as a world power.
This volume is a collection of tributes to John F. Kennedy that includes a dedication by Lyndon B. Johnson, as president, and a foreword by Theodore Sorensen. The collection is made up of media reports, letters from significant political figures in the United States, foreign leaders and letters from average citizens written to the Kennedys.
