About This Item

Liverpool: Published as the Act directs by M.A. Gage, March 1st, 1836.. FIRST EDITION. Large hand-coloured decorative engraved plan of Liverpool (100 x 170 cm, overall 104 x 175 cm) showing administrative divisions or wards, buildings, street layout and the docklands on the River Mersey. Engraved by Thomas Starling after Gage, dissected into 40 panels and backed onto linen, folding into contemporary slipcase of maroon morocco stamped in blind and lettered in gilt. Embellished with calligraphic cartouche, compass rose, prominent Greek-key and foliate border, the Liverpool City crest, and William the Fourth's coat of arms. Ownership inscription of Grosvenor Bartelot. Some minor offsetting, small loss to upper right margin not affecting map, generally an excellent example. A slightly smaller issue was published in London in August of the same year.
