About This Item

Paris: Stock, Editeur, 1899. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Author. Brieux, Eugène [1858-1932] French journalist and dramatist. LES TROIS FILLES de M. Dupont. Signée (The Three Daughters of M. Dupont). Comedy, 4 acts. Paris: Stock, Editeur, 1899. First Edition / Édition originale. Sm. 8vo., / in-8. 187pp. Inscribed on the Half-title: "À monsieur Roujon ? De reconnaissance et d'amitié / Brieux". Trans. "To Mr. Roujon ? Of appreciation and friendship / Brieux".
Also tipped to the second blank, a short ALS on blue with postage stamp - 26 Rue Victor-Massé letterhead:
"Mon cher compère ? j'ai été particulièrement sensible à vos félicitations ? en exprimer ? un cordial remerciement Tout ? / Brieux". Trans. "My dear accomplice I was particularly touched by your praises ? to express ? a cordial word of thanks All ? Brieux".

A very good example rarely seen inscribed, showing a few bleached-out spots from the adhesives used but the balance of pages clean. Rebound in gilt lettered blue cloth in fine condition. LES TROIS FILLES de M. Dupont is a powerful, somewhat brutal, study of the miseries imposed on poor middle-class girls by the French system of dowry, essentially in LES TROIS FILLES, Brieux had presented a brief on behalf of women's rights to motherhood in the face of Men's selfish possessiveness. An important book. 17 editions were published between 1899 and 1922 in French.
