Attractive reissue of the Guayanese author's first book, which first saw publication in 1926. Tropic Death features "stories and sketches of poor blacks in the West Indies and Panama, reflecting the speech, rhythm, and myths that exist among a people faced with starvation, drought, and racial problems" (Perry, Margaret. The Harlem Renaissance: An Annotated Bibliography and Commentary, 504). After emmigrating to the United States, Walrond became a noted author, editor, and Harlem Renaissance figure, becoming deeply involved with the UNIA and the National Urban League.
