About This Item

The Easton Press. ** RARE ** EASTON PRESS ** AS NEW ** GIFT QUALITY ** UNREAD AND UNMARKED ** FULL LEATHER BINDING ** NOT A LIBRARY BOOK ** CLEAN AND STAIN-FREE ** ILLUSTRATED ** WITH BLANK, UNUSED EASTON BOOKPLATE LAID IN ** Published by The Easton Press, copyright 1999, with 319 pages, thick large octavo (8vo). With illustrations by Richard Sparks. This is a flawless, unread copy. The book was purchased new by its original owner, placed on a shelf, and never read. NOTE: Easton published this book with 2 different bindings; one has elaborate gilt decorating the front pictorial and lettering, and much gilt embossing on the spine. That version was issued as part of Easton's 20 volume Hemingway set. The version we have was issued to members as a stand-alone volume, and was much more restrained and subtle in the use of gilt. Our version is much harder to find. The book has a full bonded leather binding, all exterior page edges are gilt, 4 raised bands on the spine, thick silk moire endpapers, attached silk ribbon bookmark. Printed on high-grade, archival paper. The book is clean, bright, and stain-free, square and straight, firm and tight in its binding, no pages loose, missing, folded, or torn. The hinges are sound and undamaged, the corners are sharp and unbumped. Internally, the pages are like new, all text sharp and legible, no writing, underlining, highlighting, or other such markings in the book. Remarkable, virtually brand new copy of this scarce book. Buy with confidence, professional booksellers for 35 years, selling books online since 1995. . As New. Hardcover. 1999.

Synopsis

Both revealing self-portrait and dramatic fictional chronicle of his final African safari, Ernest Hemingway's last unpublished work was written when he returned from Kenya in 1953. Edited by his son Patrick, who accompanied his father on the safari, True at First Light offers rare insights into the legendary American writer. The book opens on the day his close friend Pop, a celebrated hunter, leaves Ernest in charge of the safari camp and news arrives of a potential attack from a hostile tribe. Drama continues to build as his wife, Mary, pursues the great black-maned lion that has become her obsession and Ernest becomes involved with a young African girl whom he supposedly plans to take as a second bride. Increasingly enchanted by the local African community, he struggles between the attraction of these two women and the wildly different cultures they represent. Spicing his depictions of human longings with sharp humor, Hemingway captures the excitement of big-game hunting and the unparallel beauty of the landscape. Rich in laughter, beauty and profound insight. True at First Light is an extraordinary publishing event -- a breathtaking final work from one of our most beloved and important writers.
