About This Item

New York:: Pantheon,, 1998.. Hardcover first edition -. Near fine in near fine dust jacket.. First US printing. Young poet's first novel, set mostly in the 50's and 60's, this is the story of Joss Moody, a half black trumpeteer from Scotland, who is revealed after his death to be a woman. Although perhaps partially inspired by the true story of the American trumpet player, Billy Tipton, this is mostly a story of family love so strong that it can survive even this revelation. Winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize and the Author's Club First Novel Award.
