Austin: W. Thomas Taylor, 1985. full leather, clamshell box. Bookbinding. tall 4to. full leather, clamshell box. (42) pages. First edition, limited to 225 numbered copies. This copy is bound in a full artist-binding by Don Etherington, bookbinder and former director of Conservation at both the Library of Congress and the Harry Ransom Center (Austin, TX). Prospectus loosely inserted. A fine copy.



The binding is a full crushed red moracco with black goat leather and blue crushed moracco onlaid leather strips. Gilt dotted tooling. Duel moracco and goat spine label with 'Michael Wilcox' stamped in gilt. Handmade leather headbands. Stamped by the binder on the rear pastedown 'Don Etherington'. The book is housed in a custom cloth-covered boards clamshell box with a leather spine label with the title stamped in gilt. An overall spectacular binding.



With Remarks on the Bindings by Michael Wilcox & on the Books by Elaine Smyth & W. Thomas Taylor. Printed by David Holman on Guarro mould-made paper with design by Taylor. Each book is described in detail with the physical description and philosophy behind the binding and is pictured in full color with a tipped-in photograph. A beautifully printed look at one of better binders working today.
