First edition, first printing, with no mention of "thousandth" reprinting on title page, and including Cincinnati among places published. All plates present. No publisher's ad pages. Original cloth expertly restored. Original endpapers present with former own named inked to front pastedown, and another name penciled in to rear free endpaper. Typical foxing and stains throughout. A solid example of the scarce first printing. A classic, made more famous by the 2013 film directed by Steve McQeen, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, that won three Academy Awards and also the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Drama.
