About This Item

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1922. Minor edge and corner wear, lightly scuffed and scratched, corners are gently bumped and rubbed, front hinge is cracked, former owner's name is on the ffep, some light shelf wear, overall a clean used well-preserved first edition! Blue cloth with red lettering and design on the front board and red lettering on the spine. 309 very clean unmarked and uncreased historical pages! "All modern literatures contain numerous examples of that shorter form of prose fiction known in English as the Short Story, although none with the possible exception of the Russian has so fully developed it into a distinct species, admirably fitted to express a racial temperament as have the French. The English experiments in this form as late as Maria Edgeworth and George Eliot were merely clumsy abbreviations of the novel, novelettes rather than true short stories, with the elaborate analyses of charcter, extended descriptions, and ponderous plots of the larger form." ---- from the Preface (The French Conte).. First Edition. Blue Cloth. Good+/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
