Circa [1930]., [1930].. Very good. - Sepia-toned publicity photo, 9- 3/8 inches high by 7-3/8 inch wide. Inscribed and signed "Sally" on the lower section of the photograph. The bottom corners of the photo are very slightly creased & there are 2 tiny pinholes along the top edge. Very good.

A head-and-shoulders portrait of 'Sally" Allgood. Smiling invitingly with her head tilted to one side, she wears a fringed shawl around her shoulders, fastened with a jeweled broach. "Copyright The Twickenham Film Studios Ltd" is stamped on the verso.

Irish American actress Sarah Allgood, also known as Sally, [1880-1950] first began to study drama under the direction of Maude Gonne and William Fay and began her career at the Abbey Theatre. By 1905 she was a full-time actress, touring England and America. Her most memorable stage performance was in Sean O'Casey's "Juno and the Paycock" [1923] at the Abbey Theatre and she was acclaimed in London when she played Bessie Burgess in O'Casey's "The Plough and the Stars". She was often featured in early Hitchcock films and she settled in Hollywood in 1940 to pursue a film acting career. She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role as Beth Morgan in "How Green Was My Valley" [1941].
