New York: The Century Co., May, 1890. First printing. Leatherette. Very Good +. First published appearance of Whitman's "A Twilight Song, for unknown buried soldiers, North and South," with attribution on page 27. (Later collected in Good Bye My Fancy, 1891) [BAL 21599]. Embossed green leatherette boards (original), gold-stamped: A Year of the Century, '90 on spine. Corners bumped, head and tail of spine mildly bent. Round-backed binding, toning to all edges, with interior pages fresh and bright. Yellow endpapers. This large volume has pulled apart at the pastedown and mull is beginning to show at the hinge. 960 pp. Small quarto, 7 x 10 inches tall. Also includes an issue devoted to California, Californiana, and many articles by the Sierra Club founder, John Muir, along with US Civil War analyses and other interesting items.
