About This Item

In a letter dated November 17,1957, writing an academic, recalls his start in writing and the influence of H.L. Mencken and on the craft of writing. This three page double-spaced letter, nearly seven hundred words, is signed in ink, with two tiny ink corrections; creased in the center and with one tiny stain; excellent condition; with the original envelope. In a second letter to the same recipient dated September 26, 1971, single-spaced, around four hundred words, signed in ink, with minor ink corrections. Cain expounds further on writing, mentioning George Jean Nathan, Lardner, Twain and London, and recounting his experience with Walter Lippmann. Creased in the center; excellent condition, with the original envelope. With the publication of The Postman Always Rings Twice, Cain was propelled into the hard-boiled company of Hammett, joined by Chandler in 1939.
