About This Item

[Legal Dispute] [Government] California Claims. In Senate of the United States. February 23,1848. 30th Congress, 1st Session [Senate] Rep. Com., No. 75. Washington, D.C., 1848. First edition. 83 pages. Disbound. 6.5 x 9 in. "Half a million dollars would pay all the just claims of California". Mr. Cass made the following Report: The Committee on Military Affairs, to which was referred the memorial of John Charles Fremont, praying an investigation of the claims of citizens of California against the United States, for money and supplies furnished by them, and for which the faith of the government is pledged."The memorialists avers that the people of California served the United States faithfully and patriotically, and deserve to be fairly and promptly paid..." John Charles Fremont led the fight for payment and was fundamental in the early history of California; his actions led to the founding of the Bear Flag Republic, and Fremont himself would go on to serve as the first Senator from California in 1850. Includes documents, investigations into the claims, and information on military actions during the Mexican-American War in which independent Californians aided the US army.
