New York, 1922. No Binding. Very Good. One page on 85"x11" Settlement letterhead with 2 attached small broadsides Handwritten notation beneath date, presumably by recipient: "ans'd 10/11" Mailing folds, mild creasing, one edge sunned Mrs Riis, President of the Settlement, writes to Mr Reid requesting financial contribution, stating "after my husband's death the burden of financing the Settlement was so great that we considered giving the house over to the YMCA" She goes on to say that she actually lived in the Settlement before deciding to "carry on our work" of 25 years, and writes that the Settlement needs $30,000 annually "It is up-hill work but we are making a mighty effort" The Settlement was located at 48 Henry Street in the Lower East Side of New York City It remained there until 1950 when it moved to Queens where it continues to serve youth, the elderly and immigrants Mary Riis' involvement continued until her own death in the 1960's .
