Philadelphia: At No. 118 Chesnut St and No. 8 Franklin Place, 1844. Stated second edition. 12mo (20cm). In brown cloth, blindstamped, and titled in gilt on spine; yellow coated endpapers; [i]-vi [7] 8-282, [5]pp; ad for Adams' "Printers' Furnishing Warehouse" at rear; illustrated with in-text wood engravings, including several pictures of presses, diagrams of different lays of the case, and 50pp of format diagrams. Pencil inscriptions to front flyleaf and rear pastedown of Carlos Smith, 1851, with newspaper clippings about printing laid down on rear board. A straight copy, much rubbed, especially at edges, with minor losses at head and tail; endpapers dirty; two small groups of leaves pulled, but holding; occasional spots of foxing: Good. Adams borrowed heavily from previously published printers' manuals, including John Johnson's Typographia (London, 1824).
