This is a volume from the Time-Life Classics of the Old West series, and is a facsimile reprint of the 1890 edition published by W E Dibble of Chicago. The subtitle continues: ''An account of the adventures and thrilling experiences of the most noted American hunter, trapper, guide, scout, and Indian fighter now living.'' (Life and Literature of the Southwest, pg 72; The Santa Fe Trail, number 121) Richens Lacy ''Uncle Dick'' Wootton made his first trip over the Santa Fe Trail in 1836; in 1856 he hauled government freight on the trail. His account contains many tales of the Trail and descriptions of wagons, techniques and personalities'' (Rittenhouse). Wootton fought Indians, ranched, trapped, raised buffalo, was an innkeeper and provisioner for westering homesteaders. Introduction by Major Joseph Kirkland. Includes the publisher's insert.
