About This Item
Chicago: M. A. Donohue. Fair. c. 1905. Broadside. This adaptation of Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was published by M. A. Donohue who published many children's books from the late 19th centry to the mid-1900's. After the copyright expired on Stowe's book, a number of publisher's issued chldren's version--frequently using different endings. The color pictorial front cover depicts little Eva sitting at Uncle Tom's knee under a tree. 26 b&w illustrations accompany the text; the illustrators are not identified, but according to J. Murphy are the work of several artists, including Eckman and Thatcher. The color frontis illustration are by Blanche Fisher Wright. The front cover illustrator is not identified. Murphy also indicates the text is an adaptation by H. E. Marshal's 1904 version in the "Told to Children" edition. Identified in small print at the bottom of the cover as "182 Uncle Tom's Cabin." This book appears to have been issued with several different cover llustrations. The covers are worn at the edges, and the red cloth binding is torn. The illustration on the rear cover (of a cow) is worn. The covers are nearly detached from the interior contents and there is a little faint splotching to the title page. The text is tanned as might be expected for this inexpensive children's book. Please inquire if you would like more information.; Color & B&W Illustrations; 8vo, 8"- 9" tall; 64 pages .
