About This Item
New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, [1970]. First edition. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. (#169196) (29871). Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii-xiii [xiv] 1-433 [434: blank], cloth. The valuable 143-page historical introduction is a continuation of Moskowitz's examination of SF in popular magazines begun in SCIENCE FICTION BY GASLIGHT (1968), though the survey here is restricted to American periodicals with emphasis on the Munsey group. Fiction selections include the original magazine texts of stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs, George Allan England, Ray Cummings, Murray Leinster, A. Merritt and others. Anatomy of Wonder (1987) 1-71.
Synopsis
A Princess of Mars is an Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction novel, the first of his famous Barsoom series. It is also Burroughs' first novel, predating his Tarzan stories. Full of swordplay and daring feats, the story is considered a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction. It is a seminal example of the planetary romance genre, which became highly popular in the decades to follow, and also has some elements of Westerns.
