In a letter to Norman Douglas in 1909, Conrad wrote that the pain caused in writing this novel made him "envy the serene fate and the comparative honesty of the gentleman in gray who lived in Dartmoor." However, financial comfort was at hand when Pinker sold serial rights to the North American Review and the English Review, which commenced publication in December 1910. Conrad made several small changes to the text that appeared in the English Review for publication in book form. Cagle A14a(1); Smith 15; Wise 19; Keating 88

Synopsis

Under Western Eyes is a novel by Joseph Conrad. The novel takes place in St. Petersburg, Russia and Geneva, Switzerland and is viewed as Conrad's response to the themes explored in Crime and Punishment; Conrad being reputed to have detested Dostoevsky. This novel is considered to be one of Conrad's major works and is close in subject matter to The Secret Agent. It is full of cynicism and conflict about the historical failures of revolutionary movements and ideals.
