About This Item

Philadelphia: Henry Carey Baird and Co., 1915 Later, expanded edition. 16mo. 6¼ x 4¾ inches. Pp. [4], 211, 16 [ads]. Frontis of a prospector, 4 further plates, title page vignette of a California gold nugget, printed in gold. Appendix, indexes. Brown cloth decorated and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Minor repair to lower inner hinge, two tiny worn spots to upper edge of front cover. A fine, tight and clean copy. First published in 1872. A very popular title that went through a number of printings. Usually found in very worn condition, our copy is very nice. One chapter is titled the Discovery of Gold in California. This edition includes an appendix on ore dressing and the testing of minerals with an extensive section of statistics of gold and silver production up to 1899. The indexes includes a general index and an index to the Appendix. Interestingly, this title is not noted in any of the standard bibliographies, including Cowan, Graff, Kurutz and Eberstadt nor any other bibliography consulted..
