London: Longman, Hurst, Rees & Orne. unbound. E. Jones. Map. Original uncolored engraving. Image measures 10 1/4" x 12 1/2".

This detailed map of the United States depicts the eastern half of the country, including the Great Lakes, Appalachian Range, and the Mississippi Delta. Published shortly after the Louisiana Purchase, the map features the area west of the Mississippi in lesser detail, noting Native American tribes and villages, rivers, and cities. The Florida peninsula is not depicted. Cities, isles, bodies of water, mountain ranges and coastal features are extensively labeled in the eastern states. Includes the Great Lakes and parts of Canada. The map is in good condition. Minor toning along original folds. Some stains and faint foxing to margins, not affecting image.

Aaron Arrowsmith (1750- 1823) was from a family of London based cartographers and publishers. Trained under John Cary and William Faden, he was given the title of "Hydrographer to the Prince of Wales" in 1810 and "Hydrographer to the King" in 1820. The family business was taken over by his sons, and eventually by his nephew, John Arrowsmith, who was a founding member of the Royal Geographical Society.
