About This Item

Brook, John. An original b&w gelatin silver photograph, approximately 13 x 6 1/4 inches, with linen covered window mat, framed and glazed in a simple walnut frame, which is sealed on the reverse and bears the Carl Siembab Gallery label, which dates this photograph as 1962, from the collection of B. A. King. The image appears to be in fine condition but has not been examined outside of the sealed frame.

Accompanying the photograph is the photographers first book, A LONG THE RIVERRUN. San Francisco: Scrimshaw Press, 1970. First ed. Oblong small 4to., 80 pp., numerous b&w photos. A near fine copy in a moderately edgeworn dust jacket. Signed by the photographer on the blank leaf opposite the title page. "Born in 1924 in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, John Brook began photographing when he was just twelve years old. After graduating from Harvard, Brook officially started his photographic career, opening a portrait studio on Newbury Street in 1946.

This was a significant step for photography in Boston, a medium that was steadily increasing its presence in museum and gallery exhibitions and collections. Brook began showing his work in Boston's Sidney Kanegis Gallery in 1955, and exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States and Europe in the first decades of his career.

In 1966 Brook was one of several photographers, including Jules Aarons, Harry Callahan, Paul Caponigro, and Minor White, who exhibited work in a group show at the reopening of the Carl Siembab Gallery on Newbury Street, where Brook showed frequently. In 1961 Brook's photography was the subject of the inaugural exhibition in a newly designed gallery at the George Eastman House. He was one of twenty photographers shown at the Kodak Pavilion of the 1970 World's Fair in Osaka, Japan.

Brook's photography appeared in Aperture, Art in America, Art News, Aura, Camera, Contemporary Photographer, Life, Modern Photography, Newsweek, Vita Fotografica, among others. His numerous awards included the gold medal at the 3rd International Biennial in Milan. Brook published two books, A Long the Riverrun (1970) and Hold Me (1977), featuring his timeless, romantic, pictorialist views." John Brook Archive.

John Brook and B. A. "Tony" King both exhibited their photographs with some regularity at the Siembab Gallery in Boston. It is presumed that this photograph would at the least been signed by Brook, if not inscribed to his fellow photographer and gallery mate. This photograph was published in a lighter form as part of Brook's portfolio in Aperture 12:3, 1965.
