A novel in letters relating the trials of Sarah Worth, a "latter-day Hester Prynne" who becomes enamored by a Hindu religious leader and joins his commune in Arizona. Stated first edition. First printing. This is a beautiful copy that appears unread. Aside from a 1.5" embossed personal library seal on the front free endpaper, this is an exceptionally clean copy with no writing, marks, underlining, or bookplates. No remainder marks. Not an ex-library copy. Spine is tight and crisp. Corners are square and not bumped. Pink cloth boards are flat and true with virtually no edge wear and just a small (1/4") pencil mark on the front board. Dust jacket is not price-clipped ($17.95) and shows minimal shelf wear/scuffing, just some very minor edge wear and a 1/2" area of creasing at the upper spine. This collectible, near fine/near fine, first edition/first printing copy is protected with an archival mylar dust jacket cover. Satisfaction guaranteed!
Synopsis
John Updike was born in Shillington, Pennsylvania, in 1932. He graduated from Harvard College in 1954 and spent a year in Oxford, England, at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art. From 1955 to 1957 he was a member of the staff of The New Yorker . His novels have won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Rosenthal Foundation Award, and the William Dean Howells Medal. In 2007 he received the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. John Updike died in January 2009.
