About This Item

Hardcover. Fine. 6 Issues. ½-leather-backed black cloth, gold lettering on spine. Illustrated with drawings, charts and many foldout engravings. 8vo. New York: Griffith, Bates & Co. 1856. First Edition. Signed by Navy Chief Engineer Alban C. Stimers on the first page: Alban C. Stimers U.S. Navy New York Feb. 1857. Stimers worked with John Ericsson on the design and construction of the ironclad turret ship U.S.S. Monitor, and served on board the Monitor during her historic battle against the Confederate ironclad C.S.S. Virginia on March 9th 1862. In 1862-63 he worked with Ericsson again during the building of the Passaic Class ironclads. He accompanied these ships during operations against the Confederacy, most notably the bombardment of Fort Sumter, in Charleston Harbor, on April 7, 1863. Some wear to binding; some light foxing. Together with a 2-page letter from William Borden to John P. Anthony, Esq. Treas. Providence Tool, dated September 10, 1861, New York Navy Yard, (Greenpoint). The letter orders various items and gun carriage parts. Pencil notations on the third page listing orders and parts for 3 projects, makes reference to Mr. Rowlands letter of the 9th. Thomas Rowland was the builder of the USS Monitor. In 1859, Rowland established the Continental Works at Green Point (now Brooklyn), New York. When the Civil War began, Rowlands company was engaged by John Ericsson to build a shot-proof steam battery which Ericsson would later name Monitor. Construction of the ironclad began in October 1861 and the Monitor was launched on January 30, 1862.
