About This Item
San Francisco: Alternative Foundations, 1972. First edition (there was an extremely similar book copyrighted in 1971 but as each have their own copyright they must each be considered first editions). Part of "The Modern Utopian" series published in the early 1970s. Quarto. 231, [1] pp. Profusely illustrated from photographs and with illustrations by Jackie Baks. Publisher's photographically illustrated wrappers. One spot to upper right corner (not egregious), previous owner has put a check mark next to five of the articles in the list of contents, old crease to lower front corner. A very good if slightly aging copy. One of the very few books about the commune movement of the early 1970s that coincided with the hippie movement in general. While virtually all of these communes are now defunct it does represent a time in American history that was quite revolutionary. Indeed in many cases one can barely find any information at all regarding these communes outside this series of books as they were published at the height of the commune movement. Aside from informational articles about specific communes there are more general articles such as "Writers Chat about Communes", "Commune Tripping". etc.
