London, England: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1855. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Thomas Hart Benson. HALF OF MAP IS MISSING. 12mo, 5.5 x 8 in., pp. xi + [1] + 394 + 2 (advertising) + map. Later green binding with original cloth to boards and spine re-attached. Black frames with floral design to boards. Gilt title to spine, quite faded. Untimmed edges. Rubbing to extremities. New endpapers. Owner's signature in ink to top of title page. Rear endpaper map,originally a frontispiece foldout, tipped in at rear. (Entitled "Part of the United States and Canada Showing the Author's Route": WESTERN HALF OF MAP IS MISSING. Map remnant has half inch tape stain on long edge, and is mounted onto replacement endpaper. As the author describes his travels through America just before the civil war, he ruminates on slavery, intemperence, rattlesnakes, Niagra Falls, forest fires, duck shooting, and dozens of other topics.
