1749. 101 HISTORICAL PLATES, 4 MAPS, 1 CITY PLAN AND 185 PORTRAITS ALL BEAUTIFULLY ENGRAVED, 18TH CENTURY, COPPER PLATES WAGENAAR, Jan. Vaderlandsche Historie Vervattende de Geschiedenissen der Vereenigde Nederlanden, inzonderheid die van Holland, van de Vroegste Tyden af: uit degeloofwaardigste Schryvers en egt Gedenkstukken zamengesteld. [History of the Netherlands, with Plates and Maps]. Amsterdam, Isaak Tirion, 1749-1759. First edition. Octavo. 20 volumes. Complete. Containing four large folding maps, 90 oval portraits by J. Houbraken, one folding city plan of Leiden, and 43 folding plates (each measuring 8 by 9 1/2 inches) mostly by Fokke, showing battles, sieges, executions, explosions, etc., all beautifully engraved on copper. Each volume is bound together with a separate volume of index and notes, dating variously from 1790-1796. With four additional volumes, dated 1789-1790, which take up the history from 1752 to 1774. Internally fine, in intact quarter-leather bindings with marbled boards, with an Institutional bookplate (cancelled) in each volume. The leather is quite dried out, with portions of spine missing on many volumes. Together with: Vaderlansche Historie. Vervattende de Geschiedenissen der Vereenigde Nederlanden, sints den Aanvang der Noord-Americaansche onlusten, en daar uit gevolgeden oorlog tusschen Engeland en deezen Staat, tot den Tegenwoordigen Tyd. [The continuation of Wagenaar's History of the Netherlands. With plates.] Amsterdam, Johannes Allart, 1788-1811. First edition, with volumes 1-3 being second printing. Volumes 1-47, and one index volume, bound as 24 volumes. Complete. Containing 95 portraits and 58 historical plates, showing battles, sea battles, executions, book-burnings, etc. As well as Dutch worthies, there are portraits of George Washington, John Adams, the Duke of York, and Van Berckel, the first Dutch Ambassador to the USA, with an illustration of his first audience in Philadelphia. Like the original 20 volume set, these are in quarter leather and marbled boards, with bookplates, and parts of several spines missing, but internally immaculate.
