About This Item

Dublin: James Duffy, 1847. First single-volume edition. Leather-bound. Very Good. Phiz. Octavo. Three-quarter brown morocco over plum-colored cloth (8 7/8 in. x 5 3/4 in.). Five raised bands to spine (six compartments),
each double ruled twice, in gilt, and decorated with a gilt triple berry design. Just a hint of rubbing to corners. Lovely marbling in aquamarine, tan, and white, to endpapers. Some spotting to rear of illustrations, and a bit to margins of the images themselves. [vi], 468 pp. Lovely! William Carleton, who authored this novel (compared to Dickens in style), was an Irish writer bestknown for his "Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry".

Originally published in three volumes, this, the first single volume, illustrated edition. "Phiz" was the pen-name used by Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882), an English artist and illustrator. He became quite well known for his illustrations of Charles Dickens's works.
