NP [D.T. Valentine], 1865-01-01. Hardcover. Acceptable. Bound in publisher's blue cloth, with seal of New York in gold on spine and front. Head and tail of spine somewhat frayed. Some old dampstaining. Color plates, (taped) fold out map in front, frontispiece portrait. Not collated. <br> Inscription from Terence P. Smith, 1866. Smith worked with the Board of Alderman. <br> In 1841 David Valentine began publishing an annual compilation of New York with historical information to show the citizenry the progress the city made each year. It was published under the title, Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York, a compendium of historical materials with illustrations, but it became known as Valentine's Manual. It included maps, lithographs and woodcuts, and contained many statistical tables, lists of social institutions, banks, schools, churches etc.
